Religious and Ethnic Diversity

In addition to Catholics, the majority of Slovene Protestants live in Prekmurje and are divided into various churches. The Reformation spread here from the first half of the 16th century and, between 1573 and 1574, the first books in Slovenia were printed at Lendava Castle. Books in the Slovenian language of Prekmurje have been published since 1715, when a translation of Luther's Small Catechism was published in Germany. In the Holocaust, the Jewish community was destroyed, but monuments and objects remain.

Members of the Hungarian national community live here, some of whom identify with the tradition of the historical province of Hetés. In Pomurje, one can find the largest ethnic group of Roma in Slovenia.
